As with any game of pure chance, there is no real effective strategic system for winning at slots. Never believe if somebody says that he has an incredible winning strategy. The game is random and arbitrary. The machines have no memory, so there is no effective way of outsmarting them. The strategy can be represented only by a number of tips. Play slots with the payout above 95%. When playing slots you must always know the odds and probabilities of the slot you are playing. Before you start playing slots get acquainted with the payout schedule. Before playing decide how much you can spend this day. Stop playing when you reach this losing limit. You will not be a winner every time you play. Try not to spend all of your time on a machine that isn't paying out. When things are going your way and you're on a lucky streak, take advantage of it and bet more. Don’t make high bets if you are not very lucky with this very slot machine. Find a machine that suits your bank-roll. Look for a dollar machine, and have some fun. Cash out the credits you’ve won before leaving the slot machine you’ve been playing. It may seem strange but some gamblers forget to do it. Try to play the slots or games you have played before.
There exist at least two types of slot players.
Persistent player.
This type of slots player is the one that believes the win is right around the corner. The machine can begin paying in any second.
The player will play until the machine pays out. He must have found a machine that haven’t paid for a long period of time or he has inserted to many coins and has got nothing. They believe that at least any payout is due to happen. The rush is that if they leave after depositing so much money in the machine it will erupt and the payouts will be often and large. Maybe it can really work if you have already spent thousands of dollars and have got nothing back. The machine must pay.
In the old days when a payout occurred players would feel the coins to see if they were hot or cold. If the coins were hot they believed that the machine had not paid for a long period of time. But in reality any machine has numerous lights which heat the coins.
Chaser is the next type of slot players.
The player have won and being reinforced by the win gains trust in the slot machine. One can feel the atmosphere of comfort and trust between the machine and the player.
Slot machines have a vivid and diverse history. They came through a number of changes and improvement. But the objective and the principle of the game always remain the same. The player inserts coins in the machine and then wins or loses according to the outcome of the game.
Basically, slot machines are all the same. They have different odds (and of course payouts), different payoffs, different symbols and different exterior arrangement, but there's little difference under the hood. There are so many varying designs around the classic slot machine that everyone could probably find their own ultimate preferred flavour.
The main difference is the number of lines. Slot machines can be either single line or multilane. In single line slots, the machine has just one line of reels, usually with 4 or 5 wheels, while in multiline there are a number of reel lines. Multi line slots are a little bit more complicated because winning combinations may play out across a number of lines; when you win, the machine will draw you how the symbols combine together and calculate the win automatically. It can happen that you win nothing during the game or that you win big in a short while. There are machines with paylines; that is, vertical lines along which a winning combination must occur, but some don’t have them, as the winning combination may come in diagonals, zigzags, strange curves and in other ways and fashions.
Another interesting variation of the slot machine is a jackpot. In jackpot games, the slot machines accumulate a fraction of every wagered bet into a virtual pot. As the players wager, the jackpot grows and grows, sometimes crossing hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is only one winning combination that can bring the gambler the jackpot.
Slot machines are historically played with coins. The new invention is a slot machine online, which doesn’t differ greatly from regular slot machines. Like regular slots they have betting limits, which can be even lower than in real casinos. Unlike the table games, slot machines don't involve any decision on the player's part and so aren't threatened by game management systems because of their fixed odds; the bet limits are more of a traditional thing than anything else.
Online slot machines also have RNG, which exclude any possibility to cheat. This methodic allows very fair and precise balancing without actually hurting neither the players' interests nor the casino revenue.
It is true that slots are designed to be honest and not to deceive a player. What you can really doubt is the honesty of some manufactures.
In the old days, slot machines worked mechanically, with independent wheels spinning until they each stopped randomly. Modern slot machines differ form the old ones greatly. Now the integral part of any slot machine is a chip, which is programmed to select numbers randomly. The selected number determines the symbol which then comes out. The computer code that generates the random numbers is responsible for whether the machine is “loose” or “tight,” so gaming inspectors look at the machine’s code to make sure that a slot machine doesn’t cheat. There is a legal rate according to which the machine has to pay out. Of course it can pay lower, which happen very seldom.
It is next to impossible to say whether the chip is programmed not in a right way because the machine is not supposed to pay out with every spin. Before the machines are installed in casinos they are examined by inspectors. But you must understand that inspectors can’t examine every machine. They examine the brands. In the case of the approval of the brand the manufactures can produce the slot machines, even change them if it doesn’t go out legal bounds. Some dishonest manufactures use the right to produce machines, but use a different chip, which is programmed to pay less or not so often.
For example, the Nevada Gaming Commission caught American Coin using chips that did not allow poker royal flushes. Similarly, Universal Distributing Company was caught programming machines to show a “near miss” of a jackpot. The effect was two-fold: the machine didn’t pay off, and customers continued to play the machine, thinking that they were very close to a big jackpot. If you think you’re playing a machine that is not honest, you can complain. Inspectors will respond by pulling the slot machine’s chip and seeing if it is an approved chip. Manufacturers that cheat are fined or they can lose their license.
Meet the man who beat the slots.
Slot machines pay on a random basis, but what if you could improve the payout a little? Would you do it? Tommy Glenn Carmichael would and did.
Tommy is now 53 and he can be said to have spent all his life inventing different devices to cheat slot machines. His first device was a kind of a top-button joint. By the way, for this device he was sent to prison. Then he was released, but continued to work at inventing devices for cheating a slot. His next invention was a slider, a guitar wire. He inserted it into the machine, which released coins form the hopper.
Later, as slot machines became computer based, he had to invent a new tool. Tommy found a manufacture who showed him the inside of a slot machine. It was enough to learn everything that he wanted. Carmichael invented what he called a “light wand. ” The wand, built with a camera battery and a bright miniature light, was used to shine into the slot machine and blind a sensor, causing the hopper to pay out coins. Carmichael marketed these wands to other slot cheats, making as much as ,000 a day. He drove expensive cars, took cruises, and bought two houses.
Eventually, all good things come to an end. For Carmichael, they ended in front of a slot machine at Circus, where he was caught with the light wand when he tried to run from security. He was fined, but soon came back to the same business. By this time, authorities had tapped his phone and recorded conversations with other cheats who used his device. Three years’ probation and expropriation was the punishment. He has been banned from entering any casino.
