Random Number Generator
Modern slot machines are computerized. The odds are programmed. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever are present for historical and entertainment reasons only. A Random Number Generator determines the positions of the reels. The machine's software contains it.
The RNG is constantly generating random numbers at an extremely high rate. The most recent random number is used to determine the result when the Play button is pressed. The result is different depending on exactly when the game is played. The result would be different a fraction of a second earlier or later.
The RNG was noticed to generate not exactly random numbers. It turned out that The number sequence is repeated time after time. The cause of it is in poor programming. Pseudo RNGs with very long periods are relatively easy to build. A single period can't be completed by any computer in the expected lifetime of the universe. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. It was he who discovered equations for specific gambling games like Keno. They allowed to predict that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the player cannot see the secquence.
Percentage Of The Payout
Winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players are typically paid out by slot machines. This is known as the theoretical payout percentage. Jurisdictions serve to control the minimum theoretical payout percentage. Law or regulation are used to establish it. A certain winning pattern is determined by every casino individually. It contains the information about the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The winning patterns on slot machines are carefully selected to yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. As for the rest of the money it goes to the players.
At the factory when the software is written a slot machine's theoretical payout percentage is set. Changing the payout percentage requires a physical swap of the software. Based on current technology, this is a time-consuming process and as such is done infrequently. There is sometimes a tamper-evident seal on the EPROM. It can only be changed in the presence of Gaming Control Board officials. Other jurisdictions randomly audit slot machines to ensure that they contain only approved software.
Thanks to the newly developed technology the game, the odds, and the payouts would be able to be changed by the casino's slot manager remotely. The change cannot be done instantaneously, but only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes. The machine must be locked to new players for four minutes and display an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made after the change is made.
Machines That Are Linked
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. The amount of the progressive jackpot is far higher than any single slot machine's.
In some cases multiple machines are linked across multiple casinos. In these cases, the machines may be owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.
Near-miss
The reel display of modern slot machines is under computer software's control. That is why it is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice is called near-miss programming.
There is a related phenomenon that is also sometimes called near-miss. The chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line is controlled by the winning percentages programmed into the slot machine. The combinations above and below the payline are all roughly equally randomly distributed. This means it is much more likely that a winning combination will appear above or below a pay line than on the pay line. This phenomenon only occurs where abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. The symbols that appear around the winning line in video slots are an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
There was an investigation held by the Nevada Gaming Commission concerning the issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line. If the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was stated to be legal. In other words, any other combination must be just as likely to occur as the near-miss. It is impossible to program the machine to show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia the usage of near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is also illegal. To audit manufacturer's practices regulators use stop motion cameras.
Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes susceptible to cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors were changed for bill acceptors. It is difficult to defraud these machines because they their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures. Recent attempts at defrauding slot machines involve manipulating the EPROM, such as by directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.
There exist at least two types of slot players.
The first type is a persistent player.
The players of this type believe that very soon there will be a period when the machine begins to pay. Any second now the slot machine will roll over and all the coins will be flying out and you will be rich.
The player has either seen a person playing a slots game for a while with no payouts or alternatively they have been depositing funds into a slots game and haven’t yet seen any payouts. They believe that at least any payout is due to happen. The rush is that if they leave after depositing so much money in the machine it will erupt and the payouts will be often and large. Makes sense if you have lost 0. 00 and have yet to win. The machine must pay.
Many years ago players have their own way of determining whether the machine has not paid out for a long period of time. They touch the coins to see whether they were cold or hot. If the coins were hot they believed that the machine had not paid for a long period of time. But in reality any machine has numerous lights which heat the coins.
The chaser.
The player thinks that the machine he is going to play is not a machine that never pays. A sense of comfort exists between the slot machine and the player.
It seems that every type of activity has its own rules of etiquette, and playing the slots is no exception. Though slots are played by one person, still thinks which can and can’t be done during playing slots. First of all decide whether to deal or not to deal with this very slot machine. It can be difficult for the solo slot player to save a machine when they go to the rest room or to get a drink, but there are signals that can be used to indicate that a machine is in play. The most commonly accepted signal is to hang a coin cup over the handle of the slot machine. Placing the coin cup on the seat has the same meaning. If you play in the casino that uses a cashless system you can just leave the jacket or one of your belongings on the seat. In your turn you should respect other players and never sit to a slot that is in play. The second tip has to do with the player card that has been left behind. It happens very often that a player leaves his card and walks away. The accepted way to deal with this situation is to place the player card on top of the slot machine where it can be easily seen and retrieved. While most casinos do allow smoking, it is important for those who smoke to be courteous to others, and to position the ashtray in a manner which inconveniences other players the least. Tipping the attendant that brings you the winning is one more etiquette rule. There are a lot of questions about the sum of a tip. For jackpots that require a hand payout, the customary tip is one half of one percent of the jackpot.
The US
The United States state governments regulate the availability of slot machines. Many states have established gaming control boards for regulating the possession and use of slot machines. Nevada is the only state that has no significant restrictions against slot machines. Slot machines are allowed only in hotel casinos operated in Atlantic City in New Jersey. Several states allow slot machines only on licensed riverboats or permanently-anchored barges. Only three horse tracks are allowed to have slot machines in Delaware. They are regulated by the state lottery commission.
Native American Casinos
Native American casinos located in reservations are not permitted to have slot machines. It is permitted when the tribe first reaches a pact with the state in which it is located. According to the pact a fraction of the gross revenue from slot machines is received by the state.
Classes Of Slots
Slot machines aren't governed by any federal law. There are different classifications of them. Some states have restrictions on the type of slot machines that can be used in a casino or other gaming area. The operation of "Class III" (or "traditional") slot machines is fulfilled from a centralized computer system. A player's chance of winning any payout is the same with every play. There are a lot of Class III slots in Nevada or Atlantic City. "Vegas-style slots" is another name for them.
A centralized computer system is connected to "Class II" slot machines ("video lottery terminals" or "VLTs"). It determines the outcome of each wager. The chance of winning a series of limited prizes is equal for each machine. A fee for each Class III game is paid by the casino to the state. There are no tight regulations for Class II games.
Characteristics Of Class II Games
The players are playing against each other. Their competition is for a common prize. There is necessarily a winner in each game. The game continues until there is a winner. A given set has a certain number of wins and losses. The combimation that has already occurred cannot occur again until a new batch is initiated. There is a dependence of between the games. The player is an active participant of the game. There is the same set of numbers for all players.
Characteristics Of Class III Games
The house plays against the player. Each game is independent of previous games. The outcome of any game is unpredictable.
Slot Clubs
In American casinos there are "slot clubs" the membership of wich is free. They return a small fraction of the amount of money that is bet in the form of comps (complimentary food, drinks, hotel rooms, or merchandise). These clubs require that players use cards to insert into the slot machines. Comps or "cash back" from these clubs can make significant differences in the maximum theoretical returns.
Slots In Australia
Queen of the Nile is a poker machine that is very popular in Australia. Gaming Machines is an official name for Australian slot machines. Australian-style gaming machines have video displays for stimulating physical reels. There are usually five of them. There are laws regulating the use of gaming machines in Australia which are created by State governments.
Not only casinos but also pubs and clubs in some states have Gaming machines. New South Wales legalized this style of gambling first. The year of 1956 was the year of their legalization in all registered clubs in the state.
Western Australia only permits the use of particular forms of gaming machine.
United Kingdom
Fruit machines, one-armed bandits and AWP are the names for slot machines in Britain. Fruit machines can be met in pubs, clubs, arcades, and some take-away food shops. These machines commonly have 3, but can be found with 4 or 6 reels with around 16 or 24 fruit symbols printed around them. These reels are spun. If certain combinations of fruit appear, winnings are paid from the machine. These are very similar to slot machines seen in casinos and elsewhere around the world. But there are some extra features. However, the jackpots from these fruit machines are strictly limited. Fruit machines in the UK also almost universally have the following features. There is an opportunity for a player to hold one or more reels before spinning. This can sometimes increase the chance of winning. A player is also given a finite number nudges following a spin. A nudge is a single-step rotation of a reel of the player's choice.
The type and the location of the machine influences the maximum payout for an individual game. Private members' clubs are allowed to have "club machines". They charge more per game and have higher jackpots.
The manner of operation of these machines is different from American slot machines. The jackpot can be won in each game independently.
The AWP fruit machine is popular across Europe and in countries such as the Czech Republic, Russia, and Ukraine.
Japanese Slots
Japanese slot machines are known as pachisuro. The traditional Japanese pachinko game is their ancestor. Slot machines are a fairly new phenomenon. Pachinko parlors and the adult sections of amusement arcades, known as game centers have them.
IC chips are used to regulate the machines. They have six different levels changing the odds of a "777". All machine varieties have certain rules and regulations.
There are many types of slot machine configurations but all work according to the same principles - put the money in the slots and pull the handle! According to the main slot classification there are two types of slots. They are straight slots and progressive slots. The main feature, which distinguishes straight slots from other types is that you get paid according to the payout table, which is shown on the slot machine. Straight slots in their turn can be divided into multiplier, bonus multiplier, multiple payline and buy-a-pay slots. When playing multiplier slots you should always bare in mind that the payoff is dependent on the number of coins being bet. The main principle of bonus multiplier slots is a bonus round, which becomes active if you play with maximum bets. The principle of multiple payline slots is that the number of enabled payline depends on the number of coins bet. The Buy-a-Pay slots are profitable only if you place maximum bets. The jackpot for Progressive slots is never the same as it grows higher with every coin put in the machine. The jackpot total is posted above the machine and can grow to enormous sums of money.
