Random Number Generator
There are many modern computerized slot machines. The odds are programmed. The reels and lever are present for historical and entertainment reasons only. A Random Number Generator determines the positions of the reels. The machine's software includes a Random Number Generator.
The RNG is constantly generating random numbers at an extremely high rate. When you pres the Play button the result is determined by the most recent random number. This means that the result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
The numbers generated by the RNG seem to be not exactly random. The sequence of numbers is repeated by most of the RNGs. This behavior is due to poor programming. Pseudo RNGs with very long periods are relatively easy to build. There is no computer that is able to complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe. It was Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, who knew the pseudo RNG code and seed values. It was he who discovered equations for specific gambling games like Keno. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So you can't find an exact place of a number in the sequence.

Percentage Of The Payout
Winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players are typically paid out by slot machines. This payout percentage is called theoretical. The minimum theoretical payout percentage varies among jurisdictions. Law or regulation are used to establish it. A certain winning pattern is determined by every casino individually. It concerns the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The winning patterns on slot machines are carefully selected to yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The rest of the money goes to the players.
At the factory when the software is written a slot machine's theoretical payout percentage is set. Only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes can the change be done. After making the change the machine is locked to new players for four minutes, it displays an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made.

Linked Machines
Offering of a particularly large prize, or jackpot becomes possible when a group of machines is linked in a special way. If a player gets a specific combination of symbols the progressive jackpot from this group of machines is given to him. The amount of the progressive jackpot is far higher than any single slot machine's.
There can also be multiple casinos consisting of multiple machines. The machines are then owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss
Computer software controls the reel display of modern slot machines. Combinations that are close to winning combinations can be displayed on the slot machine intentionally.
This practice is called near-miss programming.
There is a related phenomenon that is also sometimes called near-miss. It is winning percentages that control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. This means it is much more likely that a winning combination will appear above or below a pay line than on the pay line. The occurance of this phenomenon is possible when abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. The symbols that appear around the winning line in video slots are an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also the subject of the Nevada Gaming Commission investigation. They ruled that this was legal, so long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed. In other words, any other combination must be just as likely to occur as the near-miss. It is impossible to program the machine to show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed either. Due to this, regulators use stop motion cameras to audit manufacturer's practices.

Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes susceptible to cheating devices and other scams.
Coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors and modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips. It is difficult to defraud these machines because they their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures. One of the recent attempts at defrauding slot machines is directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.

There exist at least two types of slot players.
Persistent player.
The players of this type believe that very soon there will be a period when the machine begins to pay. Just a second and the coins will be flying all over the casino!
The player has either seen a person playing a slots game for a while with no payouts or alternatively they have been depositing funds into a slots game and haven’t yet seen any payouts. They know the next big win, or any win is due to pay out. They can’t leave the machine because as soon as they do it will burst forth and pay out large sums. Makes sense if you have lost 0. 00 and have yet to win. The machine will pay any way.
In the old days when a payout occurred players would feel the coins to see if they were hot or cold. If the coins where hot then the slot machine had not paid out in a while and to the chaser this was good as the machine was do. The heat of the machines lights, etc would eventually heat the coins.
The chaser.
The player believes the slot machine is not one of those machines that never pay. Players feel more comfortable and confident because they have been reinforced with a win and gain trust in the machine. One can feel the atmosphere of comfort and trust between the machine and the player.

Slots are one of the oldest casino entertainments. But multi line slots can have up to 25 lines. Inspectors look at brands of machines and their chips before they are installed in casinos, but they can’t inspect each machine. In the case of the approval of the brand the manufactures can produce the slot machines, even change them if it doesn’t go out legal bounds. Manufacturers can change chips to make a machine pay less as long as the inspectors have approved that particular chip.
There is an example when there was inserted an illegal tip which doesn’t allow royal flushes. Similarly, Universal Distributing Company was caught programming machines to show a “near miss” of a jackpot. The effect was two-fold: the machine didn’t pay off, and customers continued to play the machine, thinking that they were very close to a big jackpot. Don’t keep silent if you come across such slot machine. In the case if the complaint the inspectors will visir the casino and check whether the machines have a legal chip. Manufacturers that cheat are fined or they can lose their license.

There is a man who managed to cheat slots.
It is impossible to cheat the slot machine, but to improve the payout is possible. It was proved by a gambler whose name was Tommy Glenn Carmichael.
Carmichael, now 53, had a long history of inventing devices to cheat slot machines. His first invention worked, but not for a long period of time as he was sentenced to prison for using it. After the release Tommy began to invent new kinds of devices for cheating slot machines. The principle of his next invention was following: he inserted a guitar wire in the slot machine and it made the coins release from the hopper.
Later, as slot machines became computer based, he had to invent a new tool. He fooled a manufacturer into believing he was a customer and showing him the inside of a slot machine. It was enough for Tommy. Carmichael invented what he called a “light wand. ” The wand, built with a camera battery and a bright miniature light, was used to shine into the slot machine and blind a sensor, causing the hopper to pay out coins. Other gamblers liked his invention and he had a lot of customers, which allowed him to earn up to ,000 a day. He drove expensive cars, took cruises, and bought two houses.
Eventually, all good things come to an end. Tommy was caught using his invention in one of the casinos. While charges from that incident were later dropped, he was caught under similar circumstances in Laughlin and later Atlantic City. By that time the police already have all necessary clues to prove that Tommy was guilty. He got three years’ probation and lost everything that he had bought before. He has been banned from entering any casino.
