The RNG
Nowadays slot machines are computerized. The odds are programmed. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever exist only for historical and entertainment reasons. It is a Random Number Generator that chooses the reels positions. The machine's software includes a Random Number Generator.
The rate of generating random numbers by the RNG is extremely high. As soon as the Play button is pressed, the most recent random number is used to determine the result. The result is different depending on exactly when the game is played. The result changes every fraction of a second.

But it is impossible for most machines, because numbers are picked by the RNG even when no one plays. So the numbers can't be exactly found in a sequence.

Percentage Of The Payout
Slot machines are typically programmed to pay out as winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players. This is known as the theoretical payout percentage. Machines That Are Linked
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. A single slot machine's jackpot is considerably less than the progressive jackpot.
In some cases multiple machines are linked across multiple casinos. In these cases the manufacturer owning these machines is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss
The reel display of modern slot machines is under computer software's control. That is why it is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
Such showing combinations that are similar to winning combinations more frequently than would occur randomly is called near-miss programming.
A related phenomenon is sometimes called near-miss. It is winning percentages that control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. The occurance of this phenomenon is possible when abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also investigated by the Nevada Gaming Commission. If the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was stated to be legal. In other words, the near-miss must be just as likely to occur as any other combination. Winning combinations aren't supposed to be shown more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
Near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed in Australia either. Stop motion cameras are used by regulators for manufacturer's practices audit.

Slots Fraud
Sometimes mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors seem to belong to cheating devices and other scams.
EPROM computer chips controls modern slot machines and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. There is a man who managed to cheat slots.
It is impossible to cheat the slot machine, but to improve the payout is possible. It was proved by a gambler whose name was Tommy Glenn Carmichael.
Tommy is now 53 and he can be said to have spent all his life inventing different devices to cheat slot machines. He was caught with one, called a top-bottom joint, and sentenced to prison. After the release Tommy began to invent new kinds of devices for cheating slot machines. For example, he invented a tool called a slider made from guitar wire that he used to insert into the machine and trip a switch, which released coins from the hopper.
When the slots were computerized he needed a new tool. He fooled a manufacturer into believing he was a customer and showing him the inside of a slot machine. It was enough for Tommy. Carmichael invented what he called a “light wand. ” The wand, built with a camera battery and a bright miniature light, was used to shine into the slot machine and blind a sensor, causing the hopper to pay out coins. Carmichael marketed these wands to other slot cheats, making as much as ,000 a day. With all this money he bought expensive cars, houses and what not.
But good thing will end one day. While using his devise Tommy was caught by the police. While charges from that incident were later dropped, he was caught under similar circumstances in Laughlin and later Atlantic City. By this time, authorities had tapped his phone and recorded conversations with other cheats who used his device. He served three years’ probation and lost both homes. He has been banned from entering any casino.
