Slot Machine Tips.
Generator Of Random Numbers
Nowadays slot machines are computerized. So the odds are whatever they are programmed to be. The reels and lever are present for historical and entertainment reasons only. A Random Number Generator determines the positions of the reels. The machine's software contains it.
The rate of generating random numbers by the RNG is extremely high. When you pres the Play button the result is determined by the most recent random number. That means that the result depends on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
Some professional gamblers observe that the RNG does not actually generate random numbers. The sequence of numbers is repeated by most of the RNGs. Poor programming is its reason. It is relatively easy to build pseudo RNGs with very long periods. No computer can complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. Equations for specific gambling games like Keno were discovered by him. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. However, this is impossible for most machines, because the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the numbers can't be exactly found in a sequence.
Payout Percentage
Winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players are typically paid out by slot machines. This payout percentage is called theoretical. Jurisdictions serve to control the minimum theoretical payout percentage. Its establishment refers to the sphere of law or regulation. A certain winning pattern exists nearly in every casino. It concerns the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The main criterion for selecting the winning patterns on slot machines is that they should yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The rest of the money goes to the players.
When a slot machine's software is written its theoretical payout percentage is also set. Changing the payout percentage after a slot machine has been placed on the gaming floor requires a physical swap of the software. Based on current technology, this is a time-consuming process and as such is done infrequently. In certain jurisdictions the EPROM has a tamper-evident seal. Gaming Control Board officials should be called for changing it. According to other jurisdictions slot machines are randomly audited to ensure that they contain only approved software.
The Nevada Gaming Commission is working now with Las Vegas casinos on technology that would allow the casino's slot manager to change the game, the odds, and the payouts remotely. Only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes can the change be done. The machine must be locked to new players for four minutes and display an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made after the change is made.
Machines Linking
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. The amount paid for the progressive jackpot is usually far higher than any single slot machine could pay on its own.
Sometimes multiple machines form multiple casinos. In these cases the manufacturer owning these machines is responsible for paying the jackpot.
Near-miss
Computer software controls the reel display of modern slot machines. That is why it is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice of showing combinations that are similar to winning combinations more frequently than would occur randomly is called near-miss programming.
This term is also used for a related phenomenon. Winning percentages programmed into the slot machine control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. The combinations above and below the payline are all roughly equally randomly distributed. This means it is much more likely that a winning combination will appear above or below a pay line than on the pay line. The occurance of this phenomenon is possible when abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. Video slot machines have virtual reels and the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also the subject of the Nevada Gaming Commission investigation. If the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was stated to be legal. The near-miss and any other combination should have the same possibility of occurrence. The machine can't show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed either. Stop motion cameras are used by regulators for manufacturer's practices audit.
Slot Machines Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes susceptible to cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. These machines and their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures and are difficult to defraud. Nowadays microwaves are used to defraud slot machines.
There exist at least two types of slot players.
The first type is a persistent player.
The players of this type believe that very soon there will be a period when the machine begins to pay. Any second now the slot machine will roll over and all the coins will be flying out and you will be rich.
Players become so persistent if they have already spent a lot of money for this slot and haven’t got anything or if they have found a slot machine that haven’t paid for a long period of time. They believe that a big win is sure to happen right now. They can’t leave the machine because as soon as they do it will burst forth and pay out large sums. Maybe it can really work if you have already spent thousands of dollars and have got nothing back. The machine can’t but paying.
Many years ago in the case of the payout players touch the coins to check whether he coins were hot or cold. If the coins were hot they believed that the machine had not paid for a long period of time. In fact the coins could be hot only because of the numerous lights that heated the coins.
The chaser.
The player thinks that the machine he is going to play is not a machine that never pays. There is some kind of comfort and trust between the slot machine and the player.
Slots are one of the oldest casino entertainments. They came through a number of changes and improvement. But the objective and the principle of the game always remain the same. Basically, you just put in the coins and wait to find out whether you won or not.
In fact all slot machines are the same. They have different odds (and of course payouts), different payoffs, different symbols and different exterior arrangement, but there's little difference under the hood. There are so many variatisn of slot machines that everybody can find something to his liking.
The main difference is the number of lines. Slot machines can be either single line or multilane. In single line slots, the machine has just one line of reels, usually with 4 or 5 wheels, while in multiline there are a number of reel lines. Multi line slots are more difficult to understand because you win according to the winning combinations on the paylines, which can be formed in many ways. Sometimes you don't win anything at all, and sometimes multiple combinations award you with relatively big winning money. There are machines with paylines; that is, vertical lines along which a winning combination must occur, but some don’t have them, as the winning combination may come in diagonals, zigzags, strange curves and in other ways and fashions.
Jackpot is also a feature peculiar not for all slots. If the slot machine has a jackpot it means that a certain amount of each additional bet is added to the jackpot. So the jackpot becomes bigger and bigger with every bet. Jackpots can reach several hundreds of thousands dollars. There is only one winning combination that can bring the gambler the jackpot.
Since slot machines appeared they have been played with coins. Online casino slot machines are no exception to that rule, even though bets might differ slightly. Like regular slots they have betting limits, which can be even lower than in real casinos. Slots are the easiest casino games. They don’t require any decision on the player’s part.
Software slot machines (as well as the digital ones) are equipped with a random number generator which is what actually plays the game. That’s why slots are as fair as it is only possible.
You can be sure that slot machines are designed to be honest. What you can really doubt is the honesty of some manufactures.
When the first slots only appeared cheating was impossible because they worked mechanically, with independent wheels spinning and then stopping randomly. Modern slots are much different. Now the integral part of any slot machine is a chip, which is programmed to select numbers randomly. The selected number determines the symbol which then comes out. There is a computer code. It generates the random numbers and determines whether the slot machine is loose or tight. The gaming inspector will examine the machine to make sure it will not deceive the player. That is, inspectors make sure that the machine pays off at the legal rate or better.
It is next to impossible to say whether the chip is programmed not in a right way because the machine is not supposed to pay out with every spin. Before the machines are installed in casinos they are examined by inspectors. But you must understand that inspectors can’t examine every machine. They examine the brands. If inspectors approve the brand, they can produce machines, and change them. But these changes must cover legal requirements. Using their right to produce slot machines they insert different chips, which makes the machine pay less.
In one of the casinos the chip was programmed in such a way that royal flushes would never come out. Similarly, Universal Distributing Company was caught programming machines to show a “near miss” of a jackpot. The effect was two-fold: the machine didn’t pay off, and customers continued to play the machine, thinking that they were very close to a big jackpot. If you think you’re playing a machine that is not honest, you can complain. Inspectors will respond by pulling the slot machine’s chip and seeing if it is an approved chip. Manufacturers that cheat are fined or they can lose their license.
There is a man who managed to cheat slots.
It is impossible to cheat the slot machine, but to improve the payout is possible. It was proved by a gambler whose name was Tommy Glenn Carmichael.
Carmichael, now 53, had a long history of inventing devices to cheat slot machines. He was caught with one, called a top-bottom joint, and sentenced to prison. After the release Tommy began to invent new kinds of devices for cheating slot machines. His next invention was a slider, a guitar wire. He inserted it into the machine, which released coins form the hopper.
Later the slot machines were not any longer mechanical, they were computerized and as a result there appeared a need for a new device. He fooled a manufacturer into believing he was a customer and showing him the inside of a slot machine. It was enough for Tommy. His new inventions was a light want that blinded the sensor of the slot machine and as a result got winnings. He sold these wands and could earn up to ,000 a day. With all this money he bought expensive cars, houses and what not.
Eventually, all good things come to an end. While using his devise Tommy was caught by the police. He was fined, but soon came back to the same business. By this time, authorities had tapped his phone and recorded conversations with other cheats who used his device. Three years’ probation and expropriation was the punishment. He has been banned from entering any casino.
