There are a lot of myths and superstitions about slots.
You can spot a winning slot machine.
The only way you'll spot a winning slot machine is when the bells are ringing and the money is dropping. RNG is the main element of every slot machine and one never knows what combination it will form.
Casinos place loose slots near the cashier, aisle ways, etc.
If this were true, it would be the only machines anyone would play. A casino mixes slots all over the casino floor. No one with any experience at playing slots would make a statement like this.
Count the number of symbols on the reels to determine your odds.
This is mathematically impossible, remember the RNG (random number generator) determines the stops. Thereare literally millions of combinations on a 3 reel slot machine, so there is no way of determining odds by the symbols on the reels alone.
Casinos can tighten or loosen slot machines from the back office.
In order to change how a slot willpay out is by changing the computer chip. No casino can just flip a switch.
A slot machine that has not been paying is due to hit.
Absolutely false. The RNG assures this. You have an equal chance of winning on a losing machine as you do on a machine that just paid out the jackpot.
Pulling the slot machine handle produces more wins than pressing the spin button and visa versa.
Again false. It makes no difference, as the computer only uses these as mechanisms to start the game. Only the computer determines a win or a loss and it has already determined if you are a winner or loser even before the first reel stops spinning.
Playing with hot coins improves your chances.
Once again, the computer determines a win or loss and the temperature of the machine or moneyirrelevant. Although it's funny that people still burn their fingers with lighters believing this works.
Casinos set slot machines to payback more on the weekends.
Wrong again. Your odds of winning are the same no matter if it's 4:00pm Monday, 8:00pm Saturday or 3:00am Wednesday. Casinos can not and do not do this.
Knowing the rules is of great importance when playing any casino game. Slots are the easiest casino games. The rules are very simple. The player has to insert coins in the slot machine, then push the button or pull the handle and wait for the combination of symbols. If you hear bells ringing and see lights flashing it means that you win. Of course you can win much, but never bet or spend more than you can afford.
Rules for playing Slots
Only slots have so simple rules. There are no real rules. All the player has to do is drop coins in the slot and pull the handle or push the spin button. The mission of the game is to match preselected symbols on the pay line, (or paylines, depending on the machine being played, there can be up to 5 pay lines on some machines), to earn credits. Slot machines can be found in many denominations from 5 cents to being the most popular, although there are also machines that accept 0 tokens.
It is a popular game for beginners because it is just them against the machine. They don't have to worry about rules and regulations, or being laughed at by the other players for making a bad play, all they have to do is try to hit the jackpot by matching the highest paying symbols on one of the pay lines.
You can be sure that slot machines are designed to be honest. What you can really doubt is the honesty of some manufactures.
When the first slots only appeared cheating was impossible because they worked mechanically, with independent wheels spinning and then stopping randomly. Modern slots are much different. There is a chip inside of every slot machine, this chip is programmed to select numbers randomly. After selecting a number a corresponding symbol appear on the screen. There is a computer code. It generates the random numbers and determines whether the slot machine is loose or tight. The gaming inspector will examine the machine to make sure it will not deceive the player. There is a legal rate according to which the machine has to pay out. Of course it can pay lower, which happen very seldom.
It is next to impossible to say whether the chip is programmed not in a right way because the machine is not supposed to pay out with every spin. The machines have to be examined before people begin to play them. Of course it is very difficult to examine every single machine, that’s why inspectors examine only brands. Once inspectors approve a brand of machine, the manufacturers can make changes to individual machines as long as the changes fall within the legal bounds. Manufacturers can change chips to make a machine pay less as long as the inspectors have approved that particular chip.
In one of the casinos the chip was programmed in such a way that royal flushes would never come out. Similarly, Universal Distributing Company was caught programming machines to show a “near miss” of a jackpot. One the one hand the machine would never have a jackpot and the player would keep on playing. If you think that you have come across such a machine you have a right to complain. In the case if the complaint the inspectors will visir the casino and check whether the machines have a legal chip. Manufacturers that cheat are fined or they can lose their license.
There is a man who managed to cheat slots.
It is not a secret that it is next to impossible to cheat a slot machine. But do you know that Tommy Glenn Carmichael managed to improve the payout of the machine to his benefit.
Tommy is now 53 and he can be said to have spent all his life inventing different devices to cheat slot machines. He was caught with one, called a top-bottom joint, and sentenced to prison. Then he was released, but continued to work at inventing devices for cheating a slot. For example, he invented a tool called a slider made from guitar wire that he used to insert into the machine and trip a switch, which released coins from the hopper.
Later, as slot machines became computer based, he had to invent a new tool. In some way he managed to fool the manufacture who showed him the inner construction of a slot machine. From that experience, he learned what he needed to know to beat it. Carmichael invented what he called a “light wand. ” The wand, built with a camera battery and a bright miniature light, was used to shine into the slot machine and blind a sensor, causing the hopper to pay out coins. He sold these wands and could earn up to ,000 a day. Now he could afford the most expensive cars and several houses.
But as known good things can’t last forever. For Carmichael, they ended in front of a slot machine at Circus, where he was caught with the light wand when he tried to run from security. While charges from that incident were later dropped, he was caught under similar circumstances in Laughlin and later Atlantic City. By that time the police already have all necessary clues to prove that Tommy was guilty. He got three years’ probation and lost everything that he had bought before. He has been banned from entering any casino.
