The RNG
Nowadays slot machines are computerized. They programme the odds. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever exist only for historical and entertainment reasons. A Random Number Generator determines the positions of the reels. It is included into the machine's software.
The rate of generating random numbers by the RNG is extremely high. The most recent random number is used to determine the result when the Play button is pressed. That means that the result depends on exactly when the game is played. The result is different every fraction of a second.
The RNG was noticed to generate not exactly random numbers. Indeed, most RNGs will eventually repeat their number sequence. Poor programming determines such behavior. To build pseudo RNGs with very long periods is relatively easy. A single period can't be completed by any computer in the expected lifetime of the universe. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. He discovered equations for specific gambling games like Keno. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. However even if nobody uses the machine the RNG continues to pick numbers. So the numbers can't be exactly found in a sequence.

Percentage Of The Payout
Winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players are typically paid out by slot machines. The term theoretical payout percentage is used to denote it. Jurisdictions serve to control the minimum theoretical payout percentage. Its establishment refers to the sphere of law or regulation. A certain winning pattern is determined by every casino individually. This is the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. Thanks to the newly developed technology the game, the odds, and the payouts would be able to be changed by the casino's slot manager remotely. The change can be done only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes. After making the change the machine is locked to new players for four minutes, it displays an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made.

Linked Machines
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. The amount paid for the progressive jackpot is usually far higher than any single slot machine could pay on its own.
There can also be multiple casinos consisting of multiple machines. The machines are then owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss
The reel display of modern slot machines is controlled by computer software. That is why it is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice of showing combinations that are similar to winning combinations more frequently than would occur randomly is called near-miss programming.
There is a related phenomenon that is also sometimes called near-miss. It is winning percentages that control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. The combinations above and below the payline are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. Only if abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG this can occur. Video slot machines have virtual reels and the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also investigated by the Nevada Gaming Commission. If the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was stated to be legal. The near-miss and any other combination should have the same possibility of occurrence. It is impossible to program the machine to show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
Near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed in Australia either. Due to this, regulators use stop motion cameras to audit manufacturer's practices.

Slots Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes considered to be cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. These machines and their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures and are difficult to defraud. An example of modern ways of slot machine defrauding is directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.

There exist at least two types of slot players.
Persistent player.
These players are sure that the machine is already ready to pay out, they just have to wait for a little. Any second now the slot machine will roll over and all the coins will be flying out and you will be rich.
The player has either seen a person playing a slots game for a while with no payouts or alternatively they have been depositing funds into a slots game and haven’t yet seen any payouts. They believe that at least any payout is due to happen. The rush is that if they leave after depositing so much money in the machine it will erupt and the payouts will be often and large. Maybe it can really work if you have already spent thousands of dollars and have got nothing back. The machine will pay any way.
In the old days when a payout occurred players would feel the coins to see if they were hot or cold. If the coins were hot they believed that the machine had not paid for a long period of time. In fact the coins could be hot only because of the numerous lights that heated the coins.
The chaser.
The player believes the slot machine is not one of those machines that never pay. The player have won and being reinforced by the win gains trust in the slot machine. There is some kind of comfort and trust between the slot machine and the player.

It is true that slots are designed to be honest and not to deceive a player. However, in the past certain manufacturers have been caught using computer chips that cheat the customer.
The very first slot machines worked according to the following principle: the wheels spun and then each of them stopped randomly. Today’s slot machines are light years away from those lumbering machines of old. There is a chip inside of every slot machine, this chip is programmed to select numbers randomly. The numbers the computer selects correspond to the symbols that appear on the slot machine’s screen. There is a computer code. It generates the random numbers and determines whether the slot machine is loose or tight. The gaming inspector will examine the machine to make sure it will not deceive the player. That is, inspectors make sure that the machine pays off at the legal rate or better.
Because slot machines don’t pay off with every spin, it’s difficult for customers to tell whether a slot machine’s chip has been programmed to pay off less often than is legally required. Inspectors look at brands of machines and their chips before they are installed in casinos, but they can’t inspect each machine. If inspectors approve the brand, they can produce machines, and change them. But these changes must cover legal requirements. Using their right to produce slot machines they insert different chips, which makes the machine pay less.
In one of the casinos the chip was programmed in such a way that royal flushes would never come out. Similarly, Universal Distributing Company was caught programming machines to show a “near miss” of a jackpot. The player would never hit a jackpot but keep on playing maximum bets. Don’t keep silent if you come across such slot machine. Inspectors will respond by pulling the slot machine’s chip and seeing if it is an approved chip. Manufacturers that cheat are fined or they can lose their license.
