The RNG
There are many modern computerized slot machines. The odds are programmed. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever are present for historical and entertainment reasons only. It is a Random Number Generator that chooses the reels positions. It is included into the machine's software.
The RNG generates random numbers at an extremely high rate. As soon as the Play button is pressed, the most recent random number is used to determine the result. This means that the result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. The result would be different a fraction of a second earlier or later.
The numbers generated by the RNG seem to be not exactly random. The sequence of numbers is repeated by most of the RNGs. Poor programming determines such behavior. To build pseudo RNGs with very long periods is relatively easy. The computer that is able to complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe hasn't been invented yet. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, was the only one who had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. Specific gambling games equations were discovered by him. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the numbers can't be exactly found in a sequence.

Percentage Of The Payout
Winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players are typically paid out by slot machines. The term theoretical payout percentage is used to denote it. Near-miss
The reel display of modern slot machines is controlled by computer software. Combinations that are close to winning combinations can be displayed on the slot machine intentionally.
Such showing combinations that are similar to winning combinations more frequently than would occur randomly is called near-miss programming.
This term is also used for a related phenomenon. It is winning percentages that control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. This means it is much more likely that a winning combination will appear above or below a pay line than on the pay line. Only if abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG this can occur. Video slot machines have virtual reels and the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also investigated by the Nevada Gaming Commission. They ruled that this was legal, so long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed. In other words, the near-miss must be just as likely to occur as any other combination. The machine can't show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed either. Due to this, regulators use stop motion cameras to audit manufacturer's practices.

Slots Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes considered to be cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. It is difficult to defraud these machines because they their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures. Recent attempts at defrauding slot machines involve manipulating the EPROM, such as by directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.

The US
In the United States the availability of slot machines is regulated by governments. Many states have established gaming control boards to regulate the possession and use of slot machines. The only state that has no significant restrictions against slot machines is Nevada. In New Jersey slot machines are allowed only in hotel casinos operated in Atlantic City. In some states slot machines are allowed only on licensed riverboats or permanently-anchored barges. Delaware allows slot machines at three horse tracks. They are regulated by the state lottery commission.

Native American Casinos
Native American casinos located in reservations are not permitted to have slot machines. When the tribe first reaches a pact with the state in which it is located it gets the permission to have them. According to the pact a fraction of the gross revenue from slot machines is received by the state.

Classes Of Slot Machines
No federal law governs slot machines. Their classifications may vary from state to state. There are states where the usage of slot machines in a casino or other gaming area is restricted. The operation of "Class III" (or "traditional") slot machines is fulfilled from a centralized computer system. The possibility that a player wing any payout is the same with every play.
