Casino Slot Rules.
Random Number Generator
There are many modern computerized slot machines. So the odds are whatever they are programmed to be. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever exist only for historical and entertainment reasons. It is a Random Number Generator that chooses the reels positions. The machine's software contains it.
The RNG is constantly generating random numbers at an extremely high rate. When a player presses the Play button the most recent random number determines the result. The result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
Some professional gamblers observe that the RNG does not actually generate random numbers. Indeed, most RNGs will eventually repeat their number sequence. Poor programming is its reason. To build pseudo RNGs with very long periods is relatively easy. No computer can complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe. It was Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, who knew the pseudo RNG code and seed values. Equations for specific gambling games like Keno were discovered by him. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the player cannot tell where in the sequence they are.
Percentage Of The Payout
The percentage of winnings paid out of the money that is wagered by players is 82–98 per cent. This is known as the theoretical payout percentage. The minimum theoretical payout percentage is controlled by jurisdictions. Its establishment refers to the sphere of law or regulation. A certain winning pattern exists nearly in every casino. It concerns the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The selection of the slot machines winning patterns is chosen in such a way that it could yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The rest of the money goes to the players.
When a slot machine's software is written its theoretical payout percentage is also set. Physical swap of the software is needed for changing the payout percentage after a slot machine has been placed on the gaming floor. As it is a time-consuming process it is done infrequently. In certain jurisdictions the EPROM has a tamper-evident seal. Gaming Control Board officials should be called for changing it. According to other jurisdictions slot machines are randomly audited to ensure that they contain only approved software.
The technology being developed by the Nevada Gaming Commission would allow the casino's slot manager to change the game, the odds, and the payouts remotely. Only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes can the change be done. The machine must be locked to new players for four minutes and display an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made after the change is made.
Machines That Are Linked
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. A single slot machine's jackpot is considerably less than the progressive jackpot.
There can also be multiple casinos consisting of multiple machines. The machines are then owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.
Near-miss Programming
The reel display of modern slot machines is under computer software's control. It is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice of showing combinations that are similar to winning combinations more frequently than would occur randomly is called near-miss programming.
This term is also used for a related phenomenon. Winning percentages programmed into the slot machine control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. The combinations above and below the payline are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. The occurance of this phenomenon is possible when abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. Video slot machines have virtual reels and the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The Nevada Gaming Commission investigated the issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line. So long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was recognized legal. The near-miss and any other combination should have the same possibility of occurrence. The machine can't show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is not allowed either. To audit manufacturer's practices regulators use stop motion cameras.
Slots Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes considered to be cheating devices and other scams.
Coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors and modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips. Different advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures have been taken to make it difficult to defraud these machines. One of the recent attempts at defrauding slot machines is directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.
There exist at least two types of slot players.
Persistent player.
These players are sure that the machine is already ready to pay out, they just have to wait for a little. Just a second and the coins will be flying all over the casino!
The player will play until the machine pays out. He must have found a machine that haven’t paid for a long period of time or he has inserted to many coins and has got nothing. They believe that at least any payout is due to happen. They can’t leave the machine because as soon as they do it will burst forth and pay out large sums. Maybe it can really work if you have already spent thousands of dollars and have got nothing back. The machine must pay.
In the old days when a payout occurred players would feel the coins to see if they were hot or cold. If the coins were hot they believed that the machine had not paid for a long period of time. But in reality any machine has numerous lights which heat the coins.
The chaser.
The player thinks that the machine he is going to play is not a machine that never pays. Players feel more comfortable and confident because they have been reinforced with a win and gain trust in the machine. A sense of comfort exists between the slot machine and the player.
Like any casino game slots have their own rules of etiquette. Though slots are played by one person, still thinks which can and can’t be done during playing slots. First of all decide whether to deal or not to deal with this very slot machine. Imagine you leave the slot and go to the bar or to the restroom and you want to come back in a few minute and continue playing. How can you let other people know that the slot machine is in play? The most commonly accepted signal is to hang a coin cup over the handle of the slot machine. Another signal is to place the coin cup on the seat. Instead of the coin cup you can leave something of your belongings. For example, a jacket or a coat. But it will work in casinos where the cashless system is used. In your turn you should respect other players and never sit to a slot that is in play. The second etiquette rule concerns the card left by the previous player. It happens very often that a player leaves his card and walks away. The accepted way to deal with this situation is to place the player card on top of the slot machine where it can be easily seen and retrieved. Nowadays most casinos allow smoking while playing. Of course, others will hardly like it, so try to make as few inconveniences as possible. The last etiquette rule is tipping a person, who brings you the winning. If you win a jackpot you should tip the attendant with a tip equal to one half of one percent of the jackpot.
The USA
In the United States the availability of slot machines is highly regulated by state governments. To regulate the possession and use of slot machines many states have established gaming control boards. The only state that has no significant restrictions against slot machines is Nevada. Slot machines are allowed only in hotel casinos operated in Atlantic City in New Jersey. Several states allow slot machines only on licensed riverboats or permanently-anchored barges. Delaware allows to have slot machines only three horse tracks. State lottery commission exists for their regulating.
Native American Casinos
Slot machines are forbidden in Native American casinos located in reservations. When the tribe first reaches a pact with the state in which it is located it gets the permission to have them. A pact entitles the state to receive a fraction of the gross revenue from slot machines.
Classes Of Slot Machines
There is no federal law governing slot machines. Their classifications may vary from state to state. There are restrictions on the type of slot machines that can be used in a casino or other gaming area in some states. The operation of "Class III" (or "traditional") slot machines is fulfilled from a centralized computer system. The possibility that a player wing any payout is the same with every play. Class III slots are most often seen in Nevada or Atlantic City. The term "Vegas-style slots" is iften used to denote them.
There are "Class II" slot machines ("video lottery terminals" or "VLTs") which are connected to a centralized computer system. The determination of the outcome of each wager is fulfilled by it. The chance of winning a series of limited prizes is equal for each machine. A fee for each Class III game is paid by the casino to the state. The state doesn't regulate Class II games so tightly.
Characteristics Of Class II Games
The players are playing against each other. Their competition is for a common prize. One player always wins the game. Only when there is a winner the game stops. There is a certain number of wins and losses in a given set of wins. Once a certain combination has occurred it cannot occur again until a new batch is initiated. The games are dependant on each other. The player must be an active participant. All players play from the same set of numbers as the numbers are announced.
Characteristics Of Class III Games
The opponents are the player and the house. Each game is independent of previous games. The outcome of any game is unpredictable.
Clubs Of Slot Players
Free memberships in "slot clubs" is offered by many American casinos. A small fraction of the amount of money that is bet is returned in the form of comps. The cards are used to insert into the slot machines in these clubs. Comps or "cash back" allows to make the differences in the maximum theoretical returns significant.
Australia
Queen of the Nile is very popular in Australia. Gaming Machines is an official name for Australian slot machines. Australian-style gaming machines have video displays for stimulating physical reels. There are usually five of them. The laws regulating the use of gaming machines in Australia are a matter for State governments.
Not only casinos but also pubs and clubs in some states have Gaming machines. New South Wales was the first state to legalize this style of gambling. In 1956 they were made legal in all registered clubs in the state.
In Western Australia only particular forms of gaming machine are used.
The UK
Fruit machines, one-armed bandits and AWP are the names for slot machines in Britain. Fruit machines can be met in pubs, clubs, arcades, and some take-away food shops. 3, 4 or 6 reels with around 16 or 24 fruit symbols printed around them can be found on the machines. These reels are spun. The machine pays winnings if certain combinations of fruit appear. These machines and slot machines seen in casinos and elsewhere around the world are very similar. These games have lots of extra features. There exists a strict jackpot limit. Fruit machines in the UK also almost universally have the following features. There is an opportunity for a player to hold one or more reels before spinning. This can sometimes increase the chance of winning. A finite number nudges following a spin is given to a player. A nudge is a single-step rotation of a reel of the player's choice.
The type and the location of the machine influences the maximum payout for an individual game. Private members' clubs are allowed "club machines". They have higher jackpots and are allowed to charge more per game.
The manner of operation of these machines is different from American slot machines. The probability of getting the jackpot in each game is independent of any other game.
The AWP fruit machine is played in Europe and in countries such as the Czech Republic, Russia, and Ukraine.
Slots In Japan
The term pachisuro is used to denote Japanese slot machines. Their ancestor is the traditional Japanese pachinko game. Slot machines are new phenomenon. There are slot machines in pachinko parlors and the adult sections of amusement arcades, known as game centers.
Regulation of the machines is fulfilled by IC chips. There are six different levels changing the odds of a "777". Despite the many varieties of the machines, there are certain rules and regulations.
All slots work according to one and the same rule. You put coins or money in the slot machine and then pull the handle. The main classification of slots distinguishes two types of slots: straight and progressive slots. If you play slots then you are paid in accordance with the payout schedule, which is always shown on the slot. Inside the straight slot group four more types are distinguished. They are multiplier, bonus multiplier, multiple payline and buy-a-pay slots. The bet amount determines the sum of the payout in multiplier slots. The main feature of the bonus multiplier slots is a bonus round, which is activated if you make maximum bets. When playing multiple payline slots remember that the number of coins being bet determines the winning amount. The Buy-a-Pay slots are profitable only if you place maximum bets. Progressive Jackpot is the main characteristic of the progressive slots. Progressive jackpot grows with each coin being bet. The jackpot total is posted above the machine and can grow to enormous sums of money.
